We started a hashtag for those who wanted to follow Xander’s journey, #TheAdventuresofXVI. It evolved into being on adventures with other preemie parents, or other special needs families. Most agencies take clients on a case by case basis. The journey through Early Intervention, life with a special needs or a medically fragile child-- is so much more than just a case. It is an adventure through life and all the twists and turns that come with it. We want to be friends and family with yours. We want to help be a shoulder and fellow advocate when times are hard, and an encourager to celebrate the wins-- no matter big or small. We experienced an incredibly isolating journey with Xander as we navigated through the difficult ins and outs of evaluations, therapies and IEP’s. Our goal is to provide assistance to all families, no matter the diagnosis.
If you feel in your gut something is off, or just not right….. Get the evaluation. There is no harm in checking to see if your child is on track. Early Intervention is the term used to describe services and support that help babies and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities and their families. Early Intervention or EI is available for children from birth to age 3 in Alabama, and most states. After Early Intervention, the school system that you are zoned for steps in and takes over with an IEP or 504. We know, we know-- all the acronyms. There is so much to do and so much to keep up with. At times, we know how frustrating and overwhelming it can be to process all of the information thrown at you in this process. Advocacy is key to maintaining your sanity and protecting the interests of your child. There are many key ways to do this. Let us help guide you and support you through this journey.
“I want to advocate for my child, but I don’t know where to go”. Navigation can be a crucial part of advocacy. There are so many wonderful resources, but it takes finding the right fit in many areas. Knowing places to receive a comprehensive evaluation, then in turn getting on waiting lists or seeking services with specific providers can be daunting. Our hope is to listen to you and your concerns and point you in the direction of our community partners to help get the best fit for you and your family. We are not aiming to diagnose your child, but rather connect you with a safe place to entrust an evaluation to. Navigating doesn’t stop after an evaluation. Specialized services and appropriate contacts through your school system, are vital assets in your journey. As your child grows and needs change, you understand that this is a marathon and not a sprint.
